Do you think the best way to learn how to paint is to copy pictures?
I have attended various art classes and found that most folk in the older age group only want to paint directly from a photo or magazine. They then say that they can’t draw real things. Surely it would be more difficult to try to exhibit paintings that are slavishly copied. What do you think about it all?
Dorothy, you are right. Slavish copy is no different from PHOTOGRAPHY. That said, copying the style of the greats just gives you some experience with different techniques. It really will contribute to an artist’s evolution to get some experience in how other artists “made it happen”. Then you incorporate that in the development of your own technique. I have been to many art classes and workshops. I swear, I only got maybe ONE really important thing from each of these experiences. BUT over the years I have incorporated them all into a unique style that is now my own. Don’t dismiss what you can learn from the masters. It is a brotherhood. You learn from those that went before you and you will pass on to those who come after you.
